ReImagine Influence
John 15:20b (NIV) If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.
Acts 6:8 (NIV) Now Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, performed
great wonders and signs among the people.
Acts 6:9 (NIV) Opposition arose, however, from members of the Synagogue of
the Freedmen (as it was called)—Jews of Cyrene and Alexandria as well as the
provinces of Cilicia and Asia—who began to argue with Stephen.
Acts 6:10 (NIV) But they could not stand up against the wisdom the Spirit gave
him as he spoke.
Acts 6:11-14 (NIV) Then they secretly persuaded some men to say, “We have
heard Stephen speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God.” 12 So
they stirred up the people and the elders and the teachers of the law. They
seized Stephen and brought him before the Sanhedrin. 13 They produced false
witnesses, who testified, “This fellow never stops speaking against this holy
place and against the law. 14 For we have heard him say that this Jesus of
Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs Moses handed down to
us.”
ARGUED.
ATTACKED HIS CHARACTER.
PUBLIC OUTRAGE.
LEGAL INTIMIDATION.
Matthew 5:11 (NIV) Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you, and
falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.
Pressure doesn’t create character; it reveals it.
Acts 7:51b-52 (NIV) You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy
Spirit! 52 Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute? They even
killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have
betrayed and murdered him.
Acts 7:54-58a (NIV) When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were
furious and gnashed their teeth at him. 55 But Stephen, full of the Holy
Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the
right hand of God. 56 “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of
Man standing at the right hand of God.” 57 At this they covered their ears and,
yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, 58 dragged him out of the
city and began to stone him.
Acts 7:58b (NIV) Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young
man named Saul.
Acts 7:59-60 (NIV) While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus,
receive my spirit.” 60 Then he fell on his knees and cried out, “Lord, do not hold
this sin against them.” When he had said this, he fell asleep.
1. FORGIVENESS AND LOVE.
Matthew 5:43-44 (NIV) You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and
hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who
persecute you.
1. FORGIVENESS AND LOVE.
2. BOLDNESS AND PRAYER.
Acts 5:41-42 (NIV) The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had
been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. 42 Day after day, in the
temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and
proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.
1. FORGIVENESS AND LOVE.
2. BOLDNESS AND PRAYER.
3. PATIENT ENDURANCE.
Hebrews 12:1b-2 (NIV) And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for
us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.
Acts 7:55 (NIV) But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the
glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.
